About
Hobo spiders and brown recluse spiders are often confused, but they have key differences in appearance, habitat, and venom effects.
Appearance
Hobo spiders are brown with a herringbone pattern on their abdomens, while brown recluse spiders are light brown with a distinct violin-shaped marking on their backs. Brown recluse spiders also have six eyes, whereas hobo spiders have eight.
Habitat
Hobo spiders are commonly found in the Pacific Northwest, living in dry, sheltered areas like basements and woodpiles. Brown recluse spiders are native to the central and southern United States, preferring dark, undisturbed places like closets and attics.
Venom & Bite Effects
Hobo spider bites are not considered medically significant, though they may cause mild redness and irritation. Brown recluse bites, however, can result in necrotic tissue damage, leading to ulcers that take weeks to heal. Severe cases may require medical attention.
